‘I salute for Rajini’s commitment and determination’: Shankar

The veteran filmmaker Shankar who has worked with superstar Rajinikanth for the films ‘Sivaji the Boss’ and ‘Endhiran’ is heaping laurels on the legend actor.

He says “One should follow Rajinikanth to learn punctuality and dedication. He is a man of perfection. Many asked me how I could make a sci-fi film with Rajini in the lead as he is known for mass movies. My answer to them is anything is possible when Rajini sir is around because, he has that mass appeal.”

Shankar further says “Rajini was always punctual to work,” Shankar says and adds: “If the schedule is at 8.30 in the morning, he would arrive at the spot early in the morning itself. Popularity sits very lightly on his shoulders.”

He adds more “It would take almost six hours to do the makeup. But Rajini would wait with all patience. I salute his commitment and determination. He is one of the most comfortable heroes I’ve worked with.”

Endhiran Nearing Its Final Stage : Climax Fight Shot At VIT

‘Endhiran’ that is shaping up in the hands of Shankar with the help of Rajini-Aishwarya Rai's perfect blend is nearing its final stage now!

The shoot of this mega budget film had been on the roll from September 2008. First Shankar took his team to Peru for shooting a duet between the lead pair. Then the team was in Goa, Chennai and then Vellore. Now 90% of the film’s shoot is over and 2 song sequences with some part of the climax fight are there to be shot, say the sources.

Last year on 26th, 27th and 28th of December the fight scene in which the Robo Rajini fights with the original Rajini was shot at VIT University in Vellore. What we hear from the sources is that the remains of the climax will be shot in the same college. Moreover the scenes which will be shot with the help of blue matte will be done in Prasad Studios.

A documentary film on the life of superstar Rajinikanth was released by Rajini yesterday at his Raghavendra Mandapam. The documentary, titled Thalaivar, was made by a hardcore fan of Rajini, Kavin Karthik.
Thalaivar covers all the important facets of Rajini’s life, right from his early days as a conductor to the superstardom. When Karthik wanted to make a documentary he approached Rajini for some inputs, which the star was glad to share. Reportedly, Rajini also made a few corrections to the documentary to set some facts right. Apart from the life of Rajini, the documentary also has an interview by a close associate of Rajini, journalist Cho Ramaswamy. There are also discussions on whether the superstar should enter the world of politics. The documentary will hit the DVD market in a month.

Director Shankar, who earned a lot of praise, for making Rajini look a lot younger than he did earlier, in ‘Sivaji-The Boss’, is reportedly walking the extra mile to make Rajini look very young in ‘Endhiran’ too.
And it may be remembered that Rajini is being paired with Aishwarya Rai in this film, and the Superstar had earlier publicly announced that he was working on looking younger and fit to play her lover in the film.
In the make up side, it is learnt that Rajini and Shankar were determined to try out an artiste who could give them the fresh, young Rajini that people had seen in the early 90s. And that was when Rajinikanth asked Kamal Haasan for help, who in turn helped him with a contact abroad.

The production cost is increasing day by day. This film is the 100th film of Art Director Sabu Cyril. He has erected a set at the cost of Rs 5 Crores. This is the costliest set erected in the history of Tamil cinema.
The set was erected using Aluminum Composite Panel which is eco friendly. This can be recycled. This set is erected at East Coast Road. A fighting sequence where Rajini fights 100 Robot Rajni’s was shot in a stunning way. This costly set was made possible because this film is being produced by Sun Pictures.

Everyone’s looking forward to Rajnikanth’s new film, Enthiran, with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Directed by ace filmmaker Shankar, the film promises to entertain.

What’s in a name? Not much, we might think. But, in tinsel town, a name seems to be everything. Writers like to have pen names and actors like to have screen names. No one knows who started the trend of having screen names, but it sure has caught on like a craze. It would not be wrong to say that it has become a rule rather than an exception to have a screen name. Screen names are no secret, we know the real names of most stars; there will be very few people who do not know that Rajinikanth was born as Sivaji Rao Gaekwad, likewise, most of us know that Tamil cinema’s legendary actor was only Ganesan before he brought Sivaji to life on stage. We could go on for ever with such names. But, let’s try something different. Why not categorize screen names by their origins, i.e., the reason why they came into being. Some actors are given
screen names by their mentors, some get prefixes or suffixes due to unforgettable performances and others adopt new names because their original ones are not that crisp and easy to recall.
Amongst names given by mentors to their wards the most famous has to be Rajinikanth itself, given by the legendary KB. Then there are a whole lot of heroines introduced by Bharathiraja who have screen names given by him, like Radha and Ranjitha, Bharathiraja itself being the screen name adopted by Chinnasamy. Malayalam director Sathyan Anthikkad felt that Diana Mariam Kurien is too long and anglicized for a desi heroine and changed it to Nayanthara, similarly Lohithadass modified Jasmine Joseph to Meera Jasmine.
The most common type of screen name has to be the ones with suffixes and prefixes that stuck on after a memorable performance. The most famous in this category has to be the legendary Ganesan who got the Sivaji prefix. Then Mohan was labeled Crazy for his antics, Ravi got a permanent Jayam prefix after his debut and many examples like Thalaivasal Vijay, Nizhalgal Ravi, Mahanadi Shankar etc. There is also the type of names that have come into being due to a characteristic trait of an artiste; try this: Gundu Kalyanam, Omakuchi Narasimham etc. Then there are stuntmen in cinema who like to have fiery prefixes like Kanal Kannan, Stunt Siva, Anal Arasu, Super Subbarayan and the likes.
But the most common reason to have screen names seems to be the non-malleable nature of the original ones which might be too big or twisted to easily pronounce or recall. That is how perhaps the rather cumbersome Jamshad Cethiracat became Arya, John Victor Kennedy became Vikram (many say that he adopted the name because of being a huge fan of Kamal’s film of the same name). Another huge Kamal fan once saw Kuruthi Punal and changed his name from Prabhu and adopted the codename of the operation in the movie to become Dhanush. Mysskin adopted his fancy name from a Russian book. Joseph Vijay changed to the much crisper Vijay, Vivekananth changed to the short and sweet Vivek, Mohammad Kutty became Mammootty etc.
Then, some actors are forced to change their names for identification purposes. Saravanan had to become Suriya (it has now changed to Suriya) because there was another Saravanan around, Ganesan had to prefix the name of his first employer Gemini because there was another Ganesan with a Sivaji prefix.
Spiritual reason brings about changes like in the case of Dhileep Kumar who became A.R. Rahman or Lawrence who became Raghava Lawrence. There are also many instances where we have no clue of the reason behind the changed name, like in the case of Moorthi who became Parthiban or C. Krishna Rao Gundu Rao who was known to us as Nagesh.
It is indeed fascinating to note that screen names seem more prevalent than real names in cinema. In tinsel town, a name seems to be more than just a name.

The most happening part was Superstar Rajnikanth gracing over the occasion with his younger daughter Soundarya Rajnikanth. Superstar Rajinikanth is said to put on 20 kilos of weight for Endhiran and the robot man has already started to add on so. After the shooting in Peru and a month long schedule in and around Chennai, the whole cast and crew is said to shift their basis to Ambur where a fat looking Rajini will be filmed. Creative director Shanker has ordered Rajini that he has to add on around 18-20 kilos of weight in order to loot like a fat scientist in his film. So, Rajinikanth is consuming white rice and especially non- veg food to gain some weight. Adding to this Biryani is said to be on his daily menu in lunch and since the superstar is in-taking this from the past few days, he has gained almost 6 kilos of weight within few days.

So, very soon, Rajinikanth will also been seen experimenting with his body as till date he has done some hair style feats in his films.

With a near on-the-trot shooting schedule that spanned over 80 days, P Vasu has completed the shooting of Kuselan and Kadhanayakudu (the Telugu version), which will hit the screens in July.

Announcing this on Wednesday, the director added that it will be a movie that will have all the commercial ingredients of a Rajini film, like punch dialogues, songs and sentiment sequences.

However, Rajini had earlier claimed that he was doing only an extended cameo. Also, it is said that he will not have a grand intro song as in other movies. The movie is likely to hit the screens on July 25.

With shooting and dubbing done, all that remains is re-recording and part of computer graphics (CG). “Re-recording will begin this Monday. Most of the CG has been done as we had begun that process early in May,” said P Vasu in the first media interaction organized after the movie’s shoot began.

The director also announced that the Telugu version of the movie is titled Kadhanayakudu and not Kuseladu, as reported by the media earlier.

The highlight of the movie is said to be a song Cinema.. cinema.. cinema.., which is an ode to Tamil cinema that is in its Diamond Jubilee year.

“This song is in celebration of 75 glorious years of Tamil cinema. We have approached many actors and actresses to do a cameo in the song, which has been written by Vaali,” P Vasu added.

Leading heroes of Kollywood like Vijay, Ajith, Madhavan, Vikram, Suriya and Simbhu are among those who have been approached. Besides, in this song, the hardwork of technicians behind the scenes for any movie will also be highlighted, he informed.

Speaking about the Kuselan’s music, composed by G V Prakash Kumar, Vasu said “His work is so good that even Rajini hadn’t believed it was this 22-year-old who had composed them.” Kuselan has five songs and its audio will be launched on June 30 at Le Royal Meridien.

Kuselan is produced by Kavithalayaa with Seven Arts as the co-producers. Kandhaswamy, Pushpa Kandaswamy (of Kavithalayaa) and Vijay Kumar (Seven Arts) were among those who attended the event.

Meena, Vadivelu, Nayantara, Chinni Jayanth, Prabhu, Brahmanandam are among the others in the movie in which Kushboo and Sneha will do cameos.

Superstar Rajinikanth and Nayantahara shot a song for Kuselan, in the backwaters of Alappuzha in Kerala.

The song is being shot by director P. Vasu on a luxury house boat in the backwaters of the famous Punnamada Kayal (lake), where the famous Nehru boat race takes place.

The song is a peppy number tuned by G.V Prakash and choreographed by Lawrence.On both sides of the lake there were thousands of people mainly tourists who had come to see the shooting and see Rajinikanth in flesh and blood.

The superstar went out of his way to wave to the people as Rajinikanth ki jai rendered the air. One of the co-producers of the film G.P Vijayakumar of 'Seven Arts' had employed nearly 100 people as security, for the actors and to avoid media glare. But a contigent of mediamen and videographers came in Chundan Vallam's (small boats) to capture the event.In the melee, cameraman Aravind Krishna fell and sprained his ankle and was hospitalised. Meanwhile the best of seafood and fresh water fishes was laid out including the delicious local Karimeen (Pearl Spot).

What amazed the locals was the superstar was able to speak in fluent Malayalam with them. After the Alappuzha shoot scenes involving Rajinikanth will be over and he is planning to take off from Kochi to Delhi enroute to Rishikesh in the Himalaya's. Every year during the summer he spents some time in the Himalayas on a "spiritual sojurn".

Rajini says 'Kuselan' will be an important film for him

KB's Kavithalaya and Seven Arts will be jointly producing the film under the direction of P. Vasu. Film Chamber president K.R.G, Tamil Film Producers Council president Rama Narayanan, directors Shankar, K.S. Ravikumar, Suresh Krishna and Charan were among the film personalities who attended the function.

Rajinikanth, talking to mediapersons, said "Kuselan", (Tamil remake of the Malayalam film "Katha Parayumbol" featuring Mammootty and Sreenivasan) would be an important film in his acting career. "Many in the film field have expressed their happiness and blessed me on learning that I would be acting in a film for Kavithalaya and Seven Arts."

Rajini said that though he had acted in several films, "Raghavendra" brought him 'respect' among the educated and the elders. "Nettrikkan" received appreciation from Kannada icon Rajkumar and Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan and others. "Annamalai" raised his status to "superstar". "Muthu" crossed the borders of India making him known world over. "Kuselan" too would bring him laurels, he added.

He said that the story of "Kuselan" is important. The business angle apart, "the reason why Vasu and Balachander keep saying that I will play an important role in the film is that fans coming to see the movie would not be disappointed".

Rajini said that the first hero in "Kuselan" is Pasupathi. "His part is 50%, Vadivelu's 25% and mine 25%." The name of his character is Ashokraj. The film's climax would be as thrilling as that of "Chandramukhi", he added.

He referred to Meena who would play an important role and said she had paired with him in a number of films. "When will you act as my mother?" he had asked her once in a lighter vein. "In this film she would act as a mother, a beautiful mother, but not as my mother."

Director Vasu said the shooting would start on March 15 at the Ramoji Rao Film City, Hyderabad. Though it is a remake of "Katha Parayumbol", some changes have been made in the story. The Tamil story revolves around Rajini. He would appear only after two or three reels, but his introduction would be grand. Prabhu also would play an important role. Meena would act as the wife of Pasupathi and mother of two children. Nayanthara pairs with Rajini.

The cast also includes Vadivelu, Geetha, 'Nizhalgal' Ravi, Vijayakumar, Thyagu, Chinni Jayanth and Vaiyapurii.

Kuselan proves Rajini is Kuberan

Rajinikanth's P Vasu directed Kuselan has been purchased for a whopping Rs 60 crore by Pyramid Saimira, according to trade reports.

It is the biggest deal in south Indian cinema in recent times and Pyramid Saimira Group Chairman P S Saminathan confirmed to Chennai Times that the group had bought all the rights of the film.

He, however, politely declined to confirm the price at which the deal had been struck. According to reports, there was a bidding war for the rights of the film which is a remake of the Malayalam super hit Katha Parayumbol and focusses on the bond between a superstar and a village barber who were childhood buddies.

Rajinikanth plays the role of the superstar made memorable by Mammootty in the original, while Pasupathy dons the barber's role.

Rajinikanth is doing an "extended cameo" as the story has been re-written by Vasu to suit the image of the Superstar.

He will appear along with Nayantara in two songs and many more scenes as the producers Kavithalaya wanted to market it as a Rajinikanth film.

Kavithalaya is the production company of Rajinikanth's guru and mentor K Balachander who is making it in association with Seven Arts’ Vijayakumar, who made the original in Malayalam.

There was a virtual bidding war between Pyramid Saimira and a Mumbai-based corporate for the rights of the film. The market is amazed that Kuselan in which Rajinikanth is making only a special appearance could fetch such a price.

Commenting on the huge deal, Saminathan said, "Rajini is India's Number one star, both in terms of popularity and in terms of the collections index. His market stretches across many countries and his opening is the biggest compared to any other star. He has a solid fan base and is the only hero who can count children, women, men, and teen as his audience. He is the only hero with class as well as mass appeal."
Throwing light on the marketing strategy they will implement for this film, he said, " We will market the film with proper carry, befitting the hero and opening.

We will do a proper controlled release and also have multiple revenue streams." If a "guest appearance" garners Rs 60 crore, imagine the price a full length Rajinikanth film like Robot can fetch in the open market.

A mop of unruly hair keeps falling on his face — much like the hairstyle Rahman sported earlier — and Prakash has an angelic smile to boot. He prefers to work his magic when the rest of the world sleeps. And like his talented uncle, Prakash also started by composing jingles.

"I was performing at a cultural festival in school when officials from the School of Audio Engineering invited me to join their institution," he says. He promptly quit Standard 11 to pursue a diploma in sound engineering.

While studying at SAE, he worked on Bharadwaj's "Autograph", "Jay Jay", "Vasoolraaja MBBS" and the animated film "Buddha." He then worked with Vidyasagar on "Kana Kandaen," "Ji" and the Telugu movie "Bangaram."

He also did some jingles for HDFC, Radio Mirchi (for their first and second anniversaries) and Nokia.

With Harris Jeyaraj, he worked on "Arasaktchi," "Anniyan" and "July Kaatru." "I was actually only the keyboard programmer for "Anniyan," but Shankar sir wanted me to sing too. That is how I ended up singing Kaadhal Yaanai."

Prakash then worked on "Swades," "Kisna," "The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey," "Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha," "Rang de Basanti," "Netaji Subhas Chandra Bo se — The Forgotten Hero" and "Anbe Aaruyire" during the one-and-a-half years he was with Rahman.

"Rahman actually never knew I was a keyboard player. Only when I started working did he come to know about this. He then called me, heard my showreel and took me in immediately."

Director Vasantha Balan was also impressed with his showreel and signed him on for "Veyyil." While working on the film, Prakash was offered "Auto," directed by husband-wife team Pushkar and Gayatri. "Veyyil has a rural feel and the songs are set in different periods. One reflects the music of the 1970s, another of the nineties, and another is contemporary. But Auto is set a jolly, fast-paced movie set in Chennai. The music reflects the city's colours."

He is doing the background score and a song for Sirish Kunder's debut Hindi film, "Jaan-e-Man," a Tamil-Telugu film "Roman Letter - III" directed by Milind Rao and produced by Ram Gopal Varma, and a fusion album with ace percussionist Sivamani.

The new kid on the block is having loads of fun. "I meet different people, and no person has similar ideas. They come to me with different perspectives, different situations. So all my songs have different flavours."

With his father helping him handle finances, he is setting up a recording studio. "The work is almost over, and Divine Labs will be opened soon."

Though he has little spare time, he makes it a point to watch the latest Hollywood and international films. "This is the only way to keep up with the latest technologies and trends." Big words from a little master.

The bevy of South Indian screen beauties who are to appear in the Rajinikanth starrer Kuselan is mushrooming. Trisha and Flora are the latest to join the exclusive club.

Flora, who has been banned in Kollywood after her alleged involvement in the US visa forgery racket, is dancing for a frisky song in the Telugu version, Kulechedu.

Kollywood’s Item girl Suja, is dancing for the Tamil version of the song, while Trisha, Sneha and Mamta Mohandas have been confirmed. From Galatta.com

Rajinikanth was born on December 12 1949 in Karnataka, India. He was the fourth child to his parents Ramabai and Ramoji Rao Gaekwad. His original name was Shivaji Rao Gaekwad. He lost his mother at the age of five. He had his schooling at the Acharya Patasala in Bangalore and then at the Vivekananda Balak Sangh, a unit of the Ramakrishna Mission. His mother tongue is Marathi, though he has not done any movie in it.

Before starting his career in the film industry, he had to take up all sorts of odd jobs. He served as a bus conductor for Karnataka state transport corporation in Bangalore. It was during this time that he nurtured his acting interests by performing in various stage plays.

Rajini, the real mantra of Tamil Nadu. Rajinikanth, the carpenter-turned-coolie-turned-conductor-turned Super Star says: "I couldn't have asked God for more."

A bit of a recluse, Rajni may be. But everyone who's had the privelege of a darshan with the thalaivar has come away with a spring in his step and a warm glow in the heart. Warm, friendly and affable, he's the sort who deserves all the superstardom he's earned. Such men, indeed, are rare...

The evergreen unique actor and the Superstar of Tamil industry, Rajinikanth was introduced by the renowned director, K.Balachandar in the movie Aboorva raagangal as a co-artist. It's been 25 years, believe it or not, since the Super Star made his debut with an inconsequential role in a Tamil film. From villain and antihero to blockbuster supernova, the gifted actor has made the most of every outing. And he's deserved every bit of the success. SCREEN analyses why...

It's a wide angle shot. A man is seen opening a gate, dressed in rags and smoking a beedi. A terminally ill disease writ large on his face. Precisely on that frame appears the Sanskrit term shruthi bedham, coupled with an off screen voice, an undoubtedly inauspicious start to any debutante's first screen appearance, especially in the maiden frame.

The film was Apoorva Raagangal (1975). The film itself was thick in controversy, and nobody took notice of the young newcomer, who was on screen barely for fifteen minutes, muttered a few apologetic words to the wronged woman and ultimately died an unsung, unheroic death.

No one in the audience, even in his wildest imagination, would have thought this nondescript man, who had won the least attention in the film would ever win over millions of hearts in Tamil Nadu. Or ride the state like a colossus. Or even that his sway over the masses would be so intense that he could rewrite the fate of Tamil Nadu politics, exactly two decades after the release of his first film.

K Balachander, the director who has an uncanny knack of creating stars, first met Rajnikant at the film institute, where he was a student. Balachander glanced at the dark young man and crisply asked him to meet him in his office the next day. When Rajnikant walked into his office gingerly, Balachander informed him he was going to act in his next film. Overwhelmed by the sudden offer from a big director, Rajnikant just could not believe his ears. It's a feeling Rajni still recounts whenever in the mood of reminiscence.

Later, Balachander confided in his close friend and associate Ananthu, Watch out! There is a fire in the young man's eyes. One day he will take Tamil Nadu by storm. How true the prediction turned out!

Producers went all out to capitalise on this new wonder called Rajnikant, and a string of films projecting him as an anti-hero, with all his stylish mannerisms in full swing, were released in quick succession. Gayathri had him shooting blue films of his wife without her knowledge, Bhairavi, Shankar Salim Simon and the like. Rajni had, by now, become an indisputable star in his own right, a force to reckon with.

Though Rajnikant persistently refers to K. Balachander as his guru, it was director SP Muthuraman who actually revamped Rajni's image entirely. Muthuraman first experimented with him in a positive role in Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri, as a villain in the first half and a refined man in the second, accepting a woman with a child ditched by her lover. The success of Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri prompted SPM to make a mushy melodrama with Rajni as a hero sacrificing everything for his siblings, a role ideally tailormade for Sivaji Ganesan! That film was Arulirunthu Arupathu Varai, in which Rajni's mannerisms were totally missing and he even appeared as an old man in the last few frames. Even while the film was in the making, Rajni had misgivings about whether the audience would accept him in tear jerkers of this kind. But the film got made and its box-office success made Rajni popular among women audiences, too. These two films were a turning point in Rajni's career he changed from an actor who merely enthralled the audiences, to one who also made them weep. The acceptance of Rajni sans his mannerisms proved he'd at last become an actor from a star. Around this time came Mullum Malarum, directed by J Mahendran, which established Rajni as a hero with a slight tinge of the negative.

Rajnikant's entry may have been humble, in an insignificant role but the success he achieved in a very short span was unimaginable. A popular Tamil magazine brought out a special supplement at a time when his still on the make, and, he presto, the magazine's sales doubled with that issue alone.

Such mass adulation, the thunderous rain of applause when Rajni delivered his lines, all put together, made him a phenomenon. It was at this point that Rajni realised the onus had been thrust on him. The fate of producers hinged on him alone. This sudden exposure to the glare of the media and the popularity and money he never imagined would be his, created a lot of stress in his mind. At that crucial time in his career when his market price had just begun to zoom, he decided to opt out of films completely, sending shock waves to his fans. Balachander, Kamalhaasan and his other well-wishers somehow, coaxed him into staying on.

The second phase of his life started with K Balaji's Billa, a superhit disproving the canard spread by detractors that Rajnikant was finished. He was accepted as a full-fledged hero. Billa was followed by a row of hits like Pokkiri Raja, Thanikkattu Raja, Naan Mahaan Alla and the all-important Moondru Mugham, in which Rajni essayed a triple role. Even two decades after its release, the last continues to be a box-office draw and Rajni's fans can never tire of the thalaivar's verbal clash with villain Senthamarai.
K Balachander's first home production, Nettrikkam proved to be yet another milestone in Rajni's career.

An analysis of Rajni's career graph shows a remarkable absence of fits and starts. It has been a slow and steady rise to the very top. As Rajni sings in a hit song from Badshah, a man's life may be divided into eight divisions. Rajni's own career may be divided into three segments. The first as a villain, the second as a hero with negative traits, and the third and present phase, as the reigning czar of Tamil filmdom. With Rajni's films fetching crores and his market price skyrocketing, the costs of production of his films became unmanageable. And Rajni has since had to stick to a one film per year formula, sometimes, he could do a film once in two years.

The new trend where his films' collections exceed normal regional film expectations started off with Badshah, followed by Annamalai, Arunachalam, Ejaman, Muthu and Padayappa. It's now an accepted fact that only a Rajnikant film can break records set by his own films.

As an actor, Rajnikant's greatest asset, apart from his style is his sense of humour and comic timing. Like Amitabh Bachchan is popular for his drunken soliloquies, Rajnikant is famous for his comic encounters with snakes, repeated umpteen times.

In the early 80s, Rajnikant made a foray into Bollywood with Andhaa Kanoon, a superhit. But Rajnikant could not concentrate on Hindi films because he was already safely ensconced down South. He still made a few films in Hindi, to mention specially Chaalbaaz which had Sridevi in a dual role. Rajni also enjoys a special kind of popularity in Telugu films and his Peddarayudu (remake of Tamil hit Nattammai) seems to have broken all previous records. The Telugu version of Padayappa has been a money-spinner, too. Rajnikant became a trendsetter recently with his Muthu and its songs becoming a rage in Japan and now, Padayappa running to packed houses in the UK and USA.

Basically a religious person, Rajnikant has always owned up his faith. "I was brought up by the Ramakrishna Mission and it's from there that I have inherited this religious frame of mind," he keeps saying. Even his films have him openly sharing his faith. In Arunachalam he mouths that famous line, "God decides and Arunachalam executes it." His public meetings are always spiced with humour and embellished with anecdotes from mythology.

Married to Lata, an English literature graduate, hailing from an elite Iyengar family in 1980, Rajni has two daughters who are carefully kept away from the limelight. Lata herself a versatile singer, now runs a school called The Ashram. The couple indulges in a lot of charity, the latest being converting his Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam into a charitable trust to help the poor and needy.

Ego and starry airs are unknown to Rajnikant. During breaks he hardly ever rushes to his air-conditioned makeup room. Instead, he prefers to sleep on the sets, even without a pillow, merely covering his eyes with a wet cloth. He never comes to functions with a retinue behind him and even prefers to drive his own car.

Rajnikant's phenomenal success and his sway over the masses make people speculate whether he will follow the footsteps of the late MGR and enter politics. Though there has been a lot of pressure on him to enter politics by the likes of actor turned journalist, Cho Ramaswamy ("Rajnikant is the best choice for chief ministership because he has a basic integrity and simplicity, a quality which is very rare these days") Rajnikant has persistently maintained a diplomatic silence, except for the fact that he openly supported the ruling DMK in the last assembly elections and discreetly in the recent Lok Sabha elections. When pressed, Rajnikant answers in his own inimitable style, "Yesterday I was a conductor, today I'm a star, tomorrow what I'll be only He knows!"

Mamta Mohandas, after a run of bad luck, has bagged the one role that could positively contribute to her stardom. Sources say that director P. Vasu has approached Mamta Mohandas, Nayantara, Meena and Sneha, for roles in Kuselan. Hariharan's Mayookham which saw Mamta"s debut, had her only Malayalam hit in Big B. She moved to other South Indian language films, and also saw her becoming a playback singer in Tollywood. Nayan is Rajini's lady love in Kuselan!

Director P Vasu has confirmed Nayantara as the lady love of Superstar Rajinikanth in his next Kuselan, which will be commenced from Feb15. The official announcement will come in a day or two after the actress officially signs the contract. Kuselan is going to be a hat-trick for Nayantara, who has been the Superstar's heroine in Chandramukhi and has done a special song with him in Shivaji.

In the original version of Kuselan (Katha Parayumbol), there is no pair for Mammootty. But P Vasu the director of Kuselan is introducing the Nayantara as Rajinikanth's pair, which will come almost throughout the film. Nayan is the heroine for the Telugu version of Kuselan too.

The producers are negotiating with Tabu and Sneha for the role of Pasupathi's pair. Some unconfirmed sources say that Simran is also conveyed her wish again to be the pair of Pasupathi. Everything will be finalized once the Superstar returns from the Himalayas. He will be expected to return on Feb. 3rd to the City.
